I went in assuming this would be more impactful than it actually was. It’s deeply reflective, but in a way that didn’t feel particularly relatable to me.
The main issue is the over-editing; it’s a total momentum killer. The film constantly jumps between the present and flashbacks at every conceivable moment in an attempt to force an emotional reaction, but it just comes across as disjointed and jarring. It’s definitely pretty to look at - though, in fairness, it’s hard to fuck up such beautiful nature and scenery - but it helps keep you engaged when the pacing lags.
Reese Witherspoon is great here. I’m actually surprised she got a Best Actress nomination - not because it wasn't deserved (it definitely was), but because the film feels almost too lowkey for it. Laura Dern is solid too, but she feels severely underused, essentially relegated to a "flashback emotional device." While various figures pop up to keep the journey interesting, this is entirely Witherspoon’s showcase, and she makes the most of it.
While I hoped for more, I still had a decent time with it. There’s so much trauma cooked into the script that without a personal connection to those specific experiences, feels a bit inaccessible. Ultimately, Reese is the reason to watch, and it’s worth it for that alone.

Self discovery and abandonment, lead to a better life sometimes. Not an action movie, but Reese does a great job, and the movie wrenches at the heart.
