Wow, I really can’t recommend this film enough. If you were on the fence like I was, just watch it!
I went in completely blind, I hadn’t caught any trailers, I didn’t even read the synopsis - very unlike me. But honestly, I think the film seriously benefited from it. The film moves very sly for the opening 20 minutes or so, you’re really left in the dark as to what the craic actually is. When it reveals its hand, you’re immediately sucked in.
It Was Just an Accident is incredibly dark, ridden with trauma, using m an approach in which I don’t feel like I’ve seen before. It somehow manages to be funny in moments too, surprisingly working to great avail. The cast all did phenomenally, especially being most of the aren’t even actors as such.
That ending was breathtaking, literally - I froze in place. Sound on a whole was used effectively throughout, but nothing like it was at it draws to a close. Certainly need to check out more of Jafar’s work!

jafar panahi is possibly the bravest living director for making films such as this one. i was completely immersed in the story and had no idea how it would turn out. amazing writing, acting, and camera-work with such incredibly long takes. what a haunting ending

This was even better on the second watch, the humor was great and the ending reminded me a lot of the sopranos ending scene. No mercy on these murderers. JAVID SHAH 🦁☀️ LONG LIVE IRAN.

Really good. It's tense and anchored by great performances, but it surprisingly made me laugh too.

One of the most beautiful films I’ve seen in a long time. Well deserving of its Oscar nominations. The directing unique and noticeable. The performances are outstanding. It was even suspenseful, but the best thing about it is it keeps you thinking about morality.

This an admirable feat of cinematic bravery that cannot be understated. It’s one of those films you have to appreciate because of how it’s made, sitting with this one is hard on the soul when considering everything these people went through to release this. From the very jump it’s apparent that this is amateur filmmaking, the script is loose, the shots are quick and simple, they almost obviously try and extend everything for as long as possible out of necessity. It took me 30 mins before I learned that this was illegal to make, learning of those stakes, learning it when I did, and understanding just how much of a risk this was completely changed the experience because it is immediately apparent that these factors were out of necessity. As a movie this is one of the most unique screenplays I’ve ever seen, everything about it is interesting, but man as it progresses does the real world weigh on you, ultimately you’re forced to remember that this is a degree of separation away from real life. There’s a deep sense of reality throughout, you’re involved as the viewer, and by the end you grieve with the cast. It’s a deeply troubling, heroic, inspiring film and I definitely recommend giving it the time it deserves. Part of me wants to abstain from a rating but for the sake respect to the film we’ll call it a 4.5/5.

Some times there is no way to win against an oppressive system, even if you have all the advantages, when it seems there is no way for them to get back, they will, they will find a way, and they will beat us.

This kept taking unexpected turns that had me tense one minute and laughing the next. It does a great job of showing the various ways different people deal with trauma and that humanity is a choice
