The Souvenir
I share a lot of the same issues with this film as I do with Baumbach’s Frances Ha in that there’s a lot of interesting concepts and ideas being thrown about, but it’s all in relation to a lead who is entirely unreadable. You never really know how Julie is truly feeling, just swooning from scene to scene - to zero fault of the actress, but more the writing. It’s incredibly overlong, far too personal and unidentifiable that it drags beyond reason.
Cast all give very good performances, especially Tom Burke who I truly believe is one of the most underrated actors working. Tilda Swinton supports, and steals in every scene she’s in. Richard Ayoade was actually very, very good here and was a genuine highlight.
Overall it’s a really boring film that’s very pretty to look at. 30 minutes could have been cut, and the film would still have been boring and overlong. I dread the idea of watching Part II, but I feel the need to know how it culminates.

i found this to be a really difficult watch. there are so many layers to every aspect, from the haunting, lingering cinematography to the reserved and precise performances. a story about influence, abuse and art above all; powerful themes are handled quite well. impressive

Tried to make a co-dependent woman falling in love with a heroin addict romantic, when it’s just boring and insufferable.

An incredible film about first loves and art vs life. The performances are phenomenal and the script and cinematography is so well done. The last shot is haunting and will stay with me for awhile. Highly recommend this one.
