I hoped for an epic historical tale, but this French Revolution anime felt like a rushed melodrama.

The Director’s Eye:
MAPPA captures the stunning opulence of the French court. Studying the aristocratic architecture actually gave me fantastic visual inspiration for my script. As a conservative valuing traditional roles, the focus on gender-bending and the chaotic dismantling of society during the revolution didn't align with my worldview. Still, Caitlin Glass brings earnest emotion to the English dub, and Hiroyuki Sawano's sweeping score is the absolute highlight.

The Cuts:
The pacing is a total mess. Cramming a decades-spanning manga into one film feels incredibly rushed. Also, knowing the creator modeled Oscar after a real-life, heavily exploited child actor left a bad taste in my mouth and made it hard to support the character design.

Verdict:
A beautifully animated but rushed historical soap opera. Too subversive and chaotic for my traditional tastes.

Favorite Line: "We must live our respective destinies while being tossed by the tides of the era."

There’s a random sex scene that’s like Gale’s sex scene from BG3… I was pretty confused at that.

Bruh it just pissed me off so badly. Doomed yuri honestly.

I really like the art style. But this was too confusing to me. Random cuts and songs. Showing previews of stuff that don’t happen later.

It was a pretty good movie even if it was basically a romantic retelling of the story of Marie Antoinette. Oscar's story is interesting but really not realistic and quite idealized compared to the time I know it's a fiction but it's not historically true which bothered me a bit.

Didn’t need a musical

seems audience is aimed at middle school age possibly. wasn’t my cup of tea personally as it seems more like a musical honestly and the animation style is personally something i haven’t been too fond of. storylines had a lot of potential:/

I was honestly let down, I was looking forward to this from its announcement and it was just sooooo… not grabbing nor capturing. I found myself forcing myself through it. The songs were just so unexpected too 😭

It was a romanticised retelling of Marie Antoinette’s ruling and quite nice watch although the songs caught me off guard lmao

oscar is literally the only reason why im giving it this rank. she is wife. (the songs are mid and theres a lot of them)
