6.5 - I don’t know how to explain it but I love this movie.
I watched it probably a dozen times at least as a kid, and always thought it was incredibly fun. And I showed it to my most recent foster kids this last weekend, & can confirm I still had a lot of fun. I don’t think they enjoyed it much, but my wife and I were giggling at the absurdity (& a couple legit jokes) from start to finish.
The action is bad, the jokes are (mostly) terrible, the story itself is just ridiculous, but it’s a pretty classic “family fun” formula and checked all the boxes for an easy Friday night watch with two kiddos under 10. I lowkey can’t believe Vin Diesel did this in the middle of a bunch of F&F movies.
Still humming the Peter Panda Dance almost a week later.

REWATCH: I grew up watching this movie, and man, it really holds up! This is arguably Vin Diesel’s best movie (shut up Fast and Furious fans! I said what I said). It’s funny, action packed and really heartfelt. Plus, I still remember all the moves to the Peter Panda Dance!

It’s structured like most fish-out-of-water comedies: hardened action hero, unruly kids, gradual bonding. The kids have distinct personalities, and the gradual shift from rigid soldier to protective father figure gives the story warmth.
