The Island
Dang this is very well done for a 2005 film! Not the greatest acting but they were clones who hadn’t really explored the real world, so by that account the acting was great! Great car chase scenes! Funny this is what they considered some of 2019 to look like, we are behind schedule a bit with some technology, or are we?

A real mixed bag here, fittingly being the last Michael Bay film I had left to watch, although a rewatch is due for MANY.
Despite being pretty early in his filmmaking career, The Island contains all of the best, and worst quirks of what makes Bay tick. It’s an underwhelming plot that feels rehashed and re-realised from many different films that came before. There’s some considerably bad acting and even worse dialogue present throughout. I will say the visual effects were really impressive for 2005, and despite their simplicity - the costume designs are certainly recognisable.
Pretty sub-par stuff from both McGregor and Johansson. They weren’t especially bad, and a lot of their “under-developed” nature plays into the characters, but I have to say it never felt convincing. Sean Bean was great though, and I often found myself yearning for him to pop-up - although he did need more screen time to be better fleshed out and impactful.
The balls to the wall action set pieces toward the end of the second act was a fundamentally the “Michael Bay Experience” and was genuinely thrilling - I just wish it occurred in one of his better movies…

The Island
Pretty dense with sci-fi, thriller action in classic Bay style. Draws from other ideas but is still entertaining. ScarJo and Ewan carry it.
