Updated review 2024: As cozy & funny, & as sad & wistful, as it was the first time I watched it. I’m so happy Da’Vine Joy Randolph earned the Oscar for her performance last year, it’s so well deserved. Between this & Klaus, it’s amazing we’ve been given two all time holiday classics since 2019.
Initial review: an instant holiday classic & future comfort movie. How can something be so sad & wistful, & so warm & cozy, simultaneously? It hits every true emotion of the holidays, & earns every moment. Aesthetically perfect, & carried by 3 A+ performances. Please see it if you can!

I didn’t expect this to be my favorite movie of the year, but I think it is.

The Holdovers
It's a beautiful warm story. Reminded me of movies like Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting. The acting was phenomenal, I was left speechless afew times from the acting alone. The style it was filmed in was so perfectly, simplistically, nostalgic. It's not just a Christmas movie but a people movie. There's something everyone can relate to. The reason I'm not giving it a higher rating is because every time I thought it was coming to an end, it spun me 360 and started a new mission.

8.8/10 Really incredible how a movie can be so sad and heartwarming at the same time. Very realistic with how the characters interact with one another and grow with each other. Loved the writing, acting, characters, and the soundtrack. The modern day It’s a Wonderful Life.

He's a bit of an asshole, but I was way more on Paul's side than I was supposed to be from the start.
Everything felt so completely authentic. I never once looked at this and said "this is a modern film trying to play the 70's", it felt so perfectly rooted in the time.

Instant classic alert!
So thankful for the film style and audio sounding as if this was filmed 40 years ago which matched the emotional journey that ensued and setting. A total stand out from its contemporaries while paying homage in a way to its predecessors, great for all ages.

One of those movies where every minute that passes is constantly going deeper into its characters which is what you hope all stories can do for you. I think its boarding school setting is utilized particularly well & having that experience will likely have you connect with what…

Warm and cozy with such a comforting aesthetic. It was able to touch on so many emotions, but never felt too sentimental. Funny but never tried to hard. Fantastic movie with great performances. 9.5/10

It wasnt my type of movie because this is a “things are just happening” movie not necessarily a plot driven story. That being said, angus actor KILLED this movie. He was phenomenal. I’m in love with him, he was amazing. His shrimp posture sold me on this hurting, tall teenage boy
