The Greatest Story Ever Told
Today I had the privilege to participate in a moment that felt extraordinary and memorable. For as long as I have been alive, Religion has been extremely influential in anything I do. And even in my adult years, I love to take the time to see how religion is viewed on the big screen. Whether it is a miracle, a moment of suffering, or a singular act of faith, these films often narrow their scope. Yet even now, I reflect on the lasting influence these portrayals have on the world and on the people who experience them
Now, I believe that every film deserves to be restored with the same level of love and care that others receive. Films express messages that deserve to be heard, and that is especially true with “the greatest story ever told”. The film accomplishes something I believe every film should strive to do: it understands that every moment deserves to be told.
From the moment Jesus heals the crippled to the moment where the last supper begins, the film gives each scene the time and reverence it needs. Many of these moments are hardly even, or are simply rushed. I deeply admire that George Steven’s took the time to give every moment it’s time to shine.
I also deeply admire the lecture that accompanied the screening. Not only did George Steven’s Jr discuss many details about his father, he also shared insights which informed the audience about both the man he was and the care he took in making the film. I also adore he brought a deeply personal sense to the experience, allowing me to better understand the intention and devotion behind The Greatest Story Ever Told.
I was also ecstatic that Oscar winning Writer and Director “Guillermo Del Toro” was present to give a lecture about the influence George Steven’s had on film. Hearing del Toro discuss Stevens’s work and legacy brought another smile to the film’s significance not only as a religious work, but as a cornerstone of film history itself.
This experience brought my love for this film to light in ways that I will remember for all of time.
