While there is always room for improvement I think for what The Eye was, it wasn’t terrible. I found myself feeling sympathy towards the main character, Sydney—I mean, she was already blind and then on top of that she finally gets to see, and now she has to deal with all this paranormal shit. Like damn, this girl cannot catch a break. That being said, the movie often leans more into drama than horror. It’s not inherently a bad thing—blending genres can work—but here, the balance feels off. There are moments that should be terrifying, but the film gets too caught up in emotional subplots to really let the horror breathe. The scares had potential but were undercut by pacing and a lack of buildup. Now, I do have to say this—and I say it with love—but Jessica Alba as Sydney didn’t fully work for me. I like Alba, but casting a well-known actress who isn’t really associated with horror made it harder to suspend disbelief. I never fully saw her as Sydney. It always felt like Jessica Alba playing someone rather than disappearing into the role. That might be a personal bias, but it affected how immersed I was. Stylistically, this is such a stereotypical 2000s movie. The color grading, the dialogue, even the random out-of-shower scene—it all screams mid-2000s horror drama. It’s hard to explain, but if you’ve watched movies from that era, you know exactly what I mean. The CGI? Not great, but also not awful. It’s 2008—we’ve seen worse. It didn’t pull me out of the movie, so I’ll give it a pass. One of the biggest surprises for me was how overrated this film feels. I’ve seen people talk about it like it’s this underrated masterpiece or something truly different, and I just don’t see it. It’s not bad, but it’s also not doing anything wildly original. It follows a familiar formula, and while it has a few interesting ideas, it never fully commits to them. Overall, The Eye isn’t a must-watch, but if you’ve got time to kill and you’re into supernatural thrillers with a dramatic core, it’s not the worst way to spend 90 minutes. Just don’t go in expecting to be blown away.
