The Elephant Man

Watched This in tribute to David Lynch’s Birthday/Passing Along with John Hurts Birthday ( RIP THE GOATS) Art is the only way I can describe this it’s soul crushing it can convey so many emotions in such little time while it’s not perfect it’s a Masterpiece 9.4/10

The Elephant Man is so disturbing — and so successful — because it makes you think about the privilege and oppression in a bottom-line way.

Profoundly moving and one of the most definitive masterpieces I’ve seen in a while. I wouldn’t be hard pressed to call it perfect. Some of the best performances and makeup ever. The very best and very worst of humanity on show, a film everyone should see in their lifetime

Very compassionate yet hard to watch at times with a twist of David Lynch flair

There's a good dose of kindness and humanity in this film. The friendship between the doctor and John Merrick is very pleasant to watch, and seeing him supported when everyone rejects him is heartwarming.

The story telling is great and it’s a quality movie, but the story itself I was not a fan of. Like it’s a good movie but it’s about a deformed man who’s horrifically abused and humiliated his whole life and the happy ending is that people start tearing him like a person.

So I decided to give David Lynch another go after my sheer disappointment of Eraserhead, and it was pretty good this time. Shit almost had me crying.

This is Lynch's more accessible film and the most different from what I've seen so far. I don't want to say that I enjoy it more cause I'm not left confused by the end even though it may be true a little, but this film is very touching, and you really feel for the character.

Kinda a crazy statement that THIS is your most normal film.

But being just that, I felt as though i was able to connect with this far more than a lot of Lynch’s other work. I wasn’t having to fixate on deciphering and analysing - instead being able to just take it all in and appreciate the story. Feels like a deservedly harsh judgement on all of us for judging a book by its cover, it’s a term thrown around a lot, but I don’t think many of us practice what we preach.

Whilst Anthony Hopkins does some very good work here, John Hurt is a triumph. I can’t even imagine the difficulty to have to perform, hell even move with all that prosthetics and make-up being applied. It’s an incredible feat and he does a sensational job.

Certainly a highlight in Lynch’s filmography for me as I begin to make my way through it. Although like all of his others, this too would benefit from a rewatch.
