There’s so much I can say about this film, first of all, what story…
It follows a story from the past and story from the present, featuring a mother and her daughter as the main characters with male counterparts.
In the past, the mother receives letters from boy in school, but it’s written by another boy for him, one day the boy who wrote the letters and the girl spend some time together, by going to a “haunted house” things escalate after that and they’re are stranded and stuck spending more time together in the rain and after, once returning at the end of the day the boy is shunned, but the girl still likes him.
Escalating a bit further eventually the boy who was the one getting the letters written for him finds out that the other boy likes the girl, and he backs off, getting punished by his dad because he wanted to be closer to the government people, he asks the boy who writes letters what would be a good way to try and stop the abuse from his dad happening, the boy gives a suggestion and what he thought by saying it didn’t happen, the boy who had the letters written tried to kill himself instead.
Escalating further the boy who wrote the letters joins the Military and goes to fight after not being able to handle what happened. She begs him to live and gives him a necklace to keep save for when he returns. He gets injured in the war but survives, only to find out he was permanently blind and lied to the girl when they met up again saying he was married, when later after he passed away she learned he wasn’t married until after she was. She never stopped loving him but got married to the boy who got the letters written.
Now in present time, the daughter likes a boy who her friend is dating, which she also helped by writing emails to him, throughout the story you learn that he didn’t actually like the girl he was with and cared deeply for her instead, and after finally leaving the girl he was dating meets up with her and she tells him her mothers story, only to find out that the man her mother loved had a son before passing, and the boy she liked was the son.
So it comes full circle and they eventually get together only through their children instead of each other.
What a movie, I was shocked, taken aback and cried, terrific movie.
