I feel like you have to know a lot about Hayao Miyazaki before watching this. But also it’s up to you how you interpret the message of the movie. I absolutely loved it and would love to see it again. I would say it’s one of my top Ghibli movies!

It's not the best studio ghibli movie that's out there but I do like the small references from some of the previous films.

Too busy trying to be an amalgamation of his entire career, that it forgets to take the time to breathe. Might be my least fave Ghibli protagonist, and the plot is lacking that usual Miyazaki originality, as I was thinking of Bioshock Infinite, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan.

I either did not do enough drugs or did too many drugs because the narrative was kind of obscure. and did I see people thrilled that birds are pooped on them because it was good luck? Only the drugs know for sure. There are much better Miyazaki films to watch.

8.2/10 ngl, this is one mysterious piece of art.It is a strange phenomenon that really brings a sense of magical worlds that makes me want to seek out more. It’s spirit is wonderous and beautiful and pleases my heart to a great extent. I Can’t wait to see what Miyazaki does next.

Has an emotional start with very compelling scenes of grief for the mother. As usual the animation is mesmerizing. Once it enters the fantastical realm the imaginative aspects are both whimsical & terrifying. The thematic purpose behind this ‘created world’ is a bit obscured…

5.5/10 you really have to know the studio ghibli franchise to understand the movie as it depicts the creators creative world beening destroyed within a movie as it’s branded as his last movie I thought it was really dramatic which I loved and just beautiful to watch

L’animation sublime comme toujours ! Une belle histoire sur la transmission d’un héritage et le renouveau. Les différents niveaux de lecture sont un peu plus ‘complexes’ que ses autres films selon moi. Ça n’en reste pas moins une belle claque audiovisuelle, je recommande 😍

Didn’t like it. The animation was amazing but the storytelling was incredibly boring. It felt like the target audience was Myasaki himself.

Miyazaki’s most personal work yet

To fully appreciate this film, I’d recommend reading up on Miyazaki’s history; specifically his early years, the recent passing of one of the Studio Ghibli cofounders, and the current fate of Studio Ghibli.

Incredible visuals as always with Studio Ghibli, but the story is quite crazy and not very understandable. A lot of scenes seemed to go one way and were never studied any deeper.

They’ve done it again

I was entertained throughout. Such unique and recognizable animation style from studio ghibli that always amazes me. Would definitely recommend watching!

It was great but not Ghibli’s best. It might be their strangest film so far and I really loved that about it. Reminded me of Spirited Away for how fantastical it was. I think its biggest weakness was its pace. Too slow in the first act, too quick in the last.

4.5/5 - my takeaway from this is that birds are evil in alternate universes

beautiful animation, beautiful scoring, beautiful story - all round great film
