Rating: 8.1/10
The Boy and the Beast is a spectacular and wonderfully creative fantasy adventure from director Mamoru Hosoda. The film is a powerful and heartfelt exploration of found family, loneliness, and strength, wrapped in a visually stunning and action-packed package.
Highlights
- Fantastic Storytelling: The screenplay is a fantastic and emotionally resonant story about two lonely souls who find family in each other.
- Compelling Characters: The central relationship between Ren/Kyūta and Kumatetsu is magnificent and hilarious, with a powerful and loving father-son dynamic.
- Stunning Animation: The animation is stunning, with a beautiful contrast between realistic and imaginative worlds, and fluid and expressive character animation.
Criticisms
- Conventional Third Act: The third act shifts into a more conventional monster battle, which is slightly less emotionally engaging than the character-focused moments.
- Underdeveloped Subplot: The human-world romance subplot feels a bit underdeveloped compared to the central relationship.
Verdict
The Boy and the Beast is a thrilling, funny, and deeply moving adventure that's a must-see for any fan of animation. It's a powerful and beautiful story about finding your family in unexpected places.

The Boy and the Beast
Has elements of Ghibli’s Boy and the Heron meets Spirited Away, but given a slightly darker su plot about hatred, isolation, and self-identity. The fight scenes were cool, but the pacing was a bit sluggish.
