WHAT THE HELL? Kanye’s floating head wasn’t even in this.

That was some boring ahh liquid ass. MAYBE if you were on acid you MIGHT enjoy it. I’m a fan of the backrooms and all that but genuinely this was one of the worst and most confusing movies of my entire life

Describing this movie is like trying to describe a dog to someone who’s never seen one before.

Amazing watch but just when it feels like it’s beginning it finishes. Major disappointment

eerie is an understatement.

i’m still processing this…

can’t stop thinking about those yellow hallways. this isn’t your typical “monster chases you and you run for your life” type horror. it’s about getting lost inside endless spaces that feel familiar but wrong, almost like memories that have rotted over time.

that shit really fucked me up.

kane gave us some really good jumpscares. i’m a victim of it… but all i can understand from my first watch is that it was all just about the eerie atmosphere.

the fear comes from the feeling that something is fundamentally wrong with the space around you. the rooms feel endless, geometry doesn’t make sense, and you’re constantly trying to orient yourself but can’t. it’s fucking insanity.

still trying to comprehend what i just watched. i have so many questions and i think that’s the strongest part about kane’s film.

cinematography & camera work is astounding. as a cinematographer myself i loved every single frame. lowkey reminds me of the apple original “severance” static shots with endless space in corporate hallways.

production design is incredible. although its just endless rooms and odd furniture, it’s just so eerie and it’s something i’ve never seen before. especially with the addition of the “found footage / vhs aesthetic” i really fucked with that, just like his blender videos.

chiwetel & renate ate their performance. absolutely phenomenal.

last thing i will say, leaving the best for last… and this actually is the fucking creepiest shit ever and it all makes sense… robert bobroczkyi… the tallest man in hollywood rn… the dude that played the offspring in “alien: romulus” the creepiest shit i’ve ever seen plays the fucking pirate clark 🫪

almost peed my pants with fear when they revealed him. straight up.

still have PTSD from alien: romulus.

anyway, the ending did confuse the hell out of me.

there must be more to the story…

might rewatch to understand more… but i doubt my brain will put the pieces together. lol

this was easily, the darkest, most psychological horror film i’ve ever laid my eyes on.

Amazing set design, sound and world building- weak plot. It obviously intends to be ambiguous, but this is frustrating when the audience if left with so many questions. I was genuinely surprised when the credits started rolling as it seemed as though the plot had just picked up.

Cartis song has more of a plot than this movie. 5.6/10

Before I mention anything else, I need to talk about the allegories because without recognising them, the film seems as bizarre as a Skibidi toilet. Mental health is, if not the running theme, specifically highlighted in the key dialogues with Mary in the beginning, middle, and end. I can't put it into words, but the drastic shift from start to finish made it evident in what the backrooms signify. That said, the execution could have been a whole lot smoother. On the production side of things, I have no faults. I loved the found footage POV, the acting, the sets, and the designs. As a story, it'll struggle getting a rewatch out of me. Slow pacing, anticlimactic tension, jarring actions, and a terrible ending. I unenthusiasticly expect a sequel.

9.2 - This is another case of it’s taken me a week to get around to writing this review and the further away I get, the more I love it.

I’m getting the feeling that it’s one that may have lowkey near endless rewatchability because there’s probably something new to get from it every time.

For me, this first watch really hit heaviest with the underlying themes of how our traumas & our personal failures can drag us down into self-destructive patterns until we create our own inescapable prisons, & if we don’t actively take responsibility & work to change those patterns we can just fall deeper & deeper. And every time we choose to remember or face those issues or traumas, but don’t address or accept them directly, we separate even more from the truth - creating a copy of a copy of a copy until we can’t remember or accept the actual truth anyways. Additionally, I also felt like it highlighted there is also an unfortunate level of comfort to be found in those same patterns, so it’s much easier to take this route than the alternate. Clark feels comfort & finds his home in his created Backrooms because it gives him a perverse control over the mistakes he made at the end of his marriage & those memories, & he can re-influence the outcomes. He is able to accept his place in the Backrooms and befriend his own reflected entity until he is forced by Mary to re-open that pathway & re-examine his guilt again, & then at that point it finally did consume him. We see a similar pattern with Mary’s story - I tried so hard to save my mom but couldn’t because I was a child so now I have to try and save everyone else but won’t truly look at myself - that she ends up trapped in her own loop. All in, my main takeaway on one watch was that refusing to be accountable for how your own actions affect your life & the lives of those around you easily puts you in a psychological purgatory.

I’ve seen so many other amazing interpretations as well; thoughts on AI & art, expanded thoughts on accountability & self reflection, thoughts on how the mind & memory work as making copies of the last memory, etc. & it’s all so deep & interesting that I don’t want it to influence my own initial thoughts here too much. But I think that’s a lot of the beauty here; that just as the Backrooms themselves expand & warp & can be peeled back a bit at a time, there is more to take from this movie as well.

As a movie itself, in terms of technicals, I was almost equally impressed. Fantastic camera work and incredible score and sound design created the perfect liminal space creepy aura and tension. And the set design should absolutely be included in any awards lists for the year. Kane Parsons has some incredible juice & I can’t wait to see what else he puts out as he develops & matures.

Sure there’s a little clunkiness in how it transitions between stories, & how it leaves some threads hanging. And maybe it’s not the *best* thing to have so many interpretations available that your message could end up muddled or confused. But I don’t mind that too much.

The biggest detractor for me was a bad theater experience with multiple interruptions for middle schoolers sneaking in, & some of the crowd thinking it was a call & response experience like The Minecraft Movie, plus the jumpiest seat neighbor of all time. None of that goes against the movie directly, but does make me feel like I need a second watch.

It’s really unfortunate that I’ve seen so many negative opinions & people trashing it because they weren’t prepared for actual thought & in-depth psychological themes, & didn’t get the creature feature they expected after playing the online spin-off games. I’m not even really a fan or knowledgeable of the lore behind the YouTube series much more than the basics. But I love the idea behind liminal spaces & psychological horror, & this met or beat every expectation I had - & over the last week, my rating has done nothing but improve.

absolute ass, inconsistent, edged us for months for absolutely nothing, entitys sucked buns, wasn't scary, too predictable, so many plot holes, trailer was better than the actual movie itself. I'm genuinely pissed off rn.

oooh this was good! Very similar to Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ but with its own unique style! Very good take on the whole backrooms concept! 8/10 would watch again! Wish it was longer

they need to get actual nerds to make these kinds of movies :/

This may be the hardest movie to ever rate for me, you could pay me $1 million to tell you one thing about this movie and I don’t think I could feels more of a fever dream than anything else and I wasn’t aware of the lore so it wasn’t great wasn’t even good, but it wasn’t bad

started off okay but somehow just kept getting worse. i was just waiting for it to be over so i could leave the theater

a surreal experience that i think perfectly captures what is horrifying about the backrooms
i loved the themes of confronting yourself, your trauma, and the need to find a sense of control in the uncontrollable
so much unnerving imagery too
+ i really liked the characters

i’m gonna rewatch in the future bc my theater was completely packed with teenagers that wouldn’t stfu the entire time

really good setting and sound, the acting was great but the mise en scène was phenomenal. it was super perfectly crafted. the only thing id say is that the plot was lacking, there were a lott of plot holes that i wish were explained but still a solid film!
