A story of a depressing medical situation, a relationship mother-daughter relationship, and coming of age. Questions of ethics and of how we think we’d feel vs how we actually feel when someone’s gone come up. It’s a good movie to make you cry if you need it.

Overall, I really enjoyed Suncoast. The whole movie felt incredibly real—the locations, the relationships, the dialogue, the emotions. Nothing felt over-the-top, and that grounded approach actually made it even more heartbreaking.

I do wish we got more of Woody Harrelson’s character, Paul. It would’ve been nice to see his relationship with Doris develop more, especially since the movie kind of markets their connection as a central part of the story. But I get that there probably wasn’t enough time to fit everything in.

The film touches on a lot of different themes—grief, mother-daughter tension, regret, the pressure to fit in, even identity as a mixed kid—but most of these aren’t explored as deeply as they could be. Because of that, it leaves you feeling a little unsatisfied, like there was more story left to tell.

One thing I really appreciated was how the friends weren’t written as stereotypical, mean high school kids. They felt like actual teenagers—trying their best but clearly limited by their lack of life experience. Sometimes they come off as insensitive, but it’s not out of cruelty; they just haven’t gone through anything similar and don’t fully understand her situation. They’re privileged and a little out of touch, but they do try, which felt really honest.

I also wish we got more of Doris’s relationship with her brother. The ending definitely hit hard, but it felt like that was more because we’d grown attached to Doris as a character than because of the loss itself. If their bond had been developed a bit more, it might’ve made the ending even more impactful.
