Summer Wars

Not at all what I was expecting. I really enjoyed the main message of the movie and I think it was presented in a wacky but memorable way. I also particularly enjoyed how they depicted the family dynamic. It was pretty good however, it had a pretty predictable plot

I expected standard VR sci-fi, but the intense focus on messy family dynamics totally won me over.

What Worked:
Hosoda’s visual blocking contrasting the hyper-clean digital OZ with hand-painted estates is gorgeous. Through my Methodist faith lens, seeing the massive Jinnouchi family rally beautifully reminds me that true strength is finding grace in community. Anchoring world-ending stakes to a personal Hanafuda card game gave the climax heavy emotional weight.

The Cuts:
The first act really dragged for me; introducing 80 family members at once was super overwhelming. Keeping it spoiler-free, the fake-dating romance felt forced and unearned. Also, using giant ice blocks to cool a supercomputer during an apocalypse felt a bit goofy, pulling me out of the high-stakes tension.

Verdict:
A stunning, heartfelt sci-fi that champions family. A must-watch for cozy, high-stakes vibes, but skip if massive casts overwhelm you.

Favorite Line: “The worst things in the world are being hungry and being alone.”

Summer Wars

Better than his oddly decent furry film, and more heartfelt & fleshed out than the disappointing Boy & the Bear. Hmm maybe he does better when not focusing mainly on animals. The family dynamics & growth had a tinge of Ghibli here. I also wasn't expecting a Log Horizon AI subplot
