Fantastic initial movie. Sequel terrible. I hope they do a insidious crossover like they have talked about

Very underrated horror movie. sure the haunted house cliche is a bit old but the way this movie builds suspense is incredible. the only music throughout the entire film were on those video tapes. and speaking of the tapes, some of the most graphic visuals ive ever seen in a movie

Don't get me wrong, this is a good movie. But I was a bit disappointed. It's been advertised as the scariest movie ever, so ofc I expected gore and lots of blood and etc. This is not that. It's more of a crime investigation with a few jumpscares than a horror movie. just fyi

Omg, I fucking understand how this is the scariest horror movie ever. Omg the jumpscares, the music, the horrificness of the home videos. It all adds up to me hiding under my blanket a couple times. Jesus Christ. The fact that the ending didn’t just end with them leaving was amaz

So good. I liked that it had little silly parts. Scary. My stupid fat sister kept banging on the door so it felt like I WAS Ethan Hawke

A number of sequences are undeniably unsettling and effective, yet it’s narrative seems to only be a device to deliver those encounters.

This film scared me for a long time when I sneakily watched it as kid. Psychologically freaky and disturbing, full of cheap jump scares but this film with have you watching through your hands. The ending however is a little cheap and predictable.

Honestly this might be one of the most overall well-crafted horror movies I’ve ever seen. I don’t know that I would go as far as calling it the scariest movie ever made like some people say, but the way this movie so subtlety creates dread and terror without almost any blood or gore needs to be applauded. There’s an unsettling and chilling feeling just watching the movie, even when you don’t know what’s going on yet. The deaths they show on the tapes kinda stick with you in a way I don’t even know how to explain. I think the biggest contributors to this is the creepy and realistic film ascetic on the tapes, the way the movie uses darkness in the house to make your mind always on edge, and the phenomenal soundtrack that somehow sounds horrifying in of itself and stays with you.
The way they also intertwine the horror with a super engaging mystery and personal struggle behind the author is really well done. I was shocked how engaging the story and characters were on top of the horror aspect. The whole movie just works insanely well and I can see why it’s so highly regarded
