Singles is easily one of my top 10 movies of all time. It’s not just a movie I love, it’s a movie that feels like a time capsule of a world I actually lived in and still carry with me. Everything about it hits that perfect note for me: the music, the atmosphere, the cast, the humor, the heart, and that unmistakable Seattle energy that made the 90s feel like their own universe.
What makes Singles so special is that it captures more than just a story about relationships and twenty-somethings trying to figure life out. It captures a moment and not in some forced, nostalgic way. It feels real, lived in, effortless. Cameron Crowe understood exactly what he was doing, and you can feel his love for Seattle, for music, and for these characters in every frame. He didn’t just make a romantic comedy; he made a love letter to an era, a city, and a culture.
And then there’s the music, which for me is a huge part of why this movie means so much. The soundtrack alone is legendary, but beyond that, the whole film breathes grunge. Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Alice In Chains, that presence is part of the soul of the movie. It’s impossible to separate Singles from that incredible Seattle scene, and that’s one of the reasons it feels so authentic. It doesn’t borrow the culture, it belongs to it.
The cast is also just perfect. Everyone feels natural and memorable, and the chemistry between them makes the whole film feel intimate and alive. There’s a charm to Singles that never wears off for me. It’s funny, romantic, messy, and sincere in a way that still feels refreshing.
More than anything, I love Singles because it takes me back to a time, a sound, and a feeling that meant everything to me. It reminds me of the 90s not as a trend, but as a real lived experience; the music, the mood, the scene, the sense that art and life were all tangled together in the best way. For anyone who loves Seattle, grunge, Cameron Crowe, and that unforgettable era, Singles isn’t just a great movie, it’s home.

This would, of course, make for a GREAT double feature with High Fidelity, and Chris Cornell is surprisingly good at character acting. Maybe not the best written movie, the characters go back and forth on their choices a bit too much in my opinion, but it charms you

kind of shockingly excellent. they managed to set up all of the little things like the “bless you” test with janet without making them feel shoehorned in or forced. super funny and the dialogue felt natural. everyone had fabulous hair. really really good
