Films that are so focused on faith are always a risky one to make. Often, it feels inevitably catered toward a particular side of the many different religions.
I don’t think Silence falls into that category. Even as a non-religious person, I too felt challenged by film’s themes and portrayals. It poses many questions about morality and the sheer concept of right vs wrong, the film demands to be seen again as there’s so much to unpack and take in on a single viewing.
Easily Andrew Garfield’s best performance, it’s not even close. Very much a solo-led film opposed to the co-lead I assumed it would be alongside Adam Driver, who too was great, albeit with limited screen time. But wow, Liam Neeson was transcendent as the film reaches the final act, so much ambiguity to every word he speaks and every glance he makes - incredible.
Very interesting to watch this after recently watching ShŌgun, seeing Japan go from “unsure” of the Portuguese and Christianity to this war on religion displayed here. A tragic, yet deeply interesting period of history.

I don’t know what to say. I love movies and this was an utter disappointment. Poor character and plot development. No emotional investment in the characters. Acting was erratic. Ending seemed unintentional. And it was twice as long as it needed to be.

Not bad! A little slow at times, but a really interesting story with a great Japanese backdrop and a hardcore look at faith through insanely difficult times. Overall, glad I watched for sure.

Silence is a slow, heavy-hitting film that dives deep into faith, suffering, and moral doubt. It’s beautifully shot and intensely acted, but definitely not an easy watch. Quiet, powerful, and thought-provoking—this one stays with you.
