This was so stupid, and I mean that in the most conflicted way possible. In one of the film’s promos they claimed that 85% of Indian men are not sure about marriage, which, I don’t know how they came to that number, but Raghuram makes for a strong case. He’s indecisive, has a wandering eye, no sense of self, doesn’t know what he wants out of life let alone in a partner. Gayatri has been betrayed before so her walls are up and she hurts people before they can hurt her. Tara is the most grounded out of the three and detached in a way you get when you’ve never been allowed to decide anything for yourself. She gets swept into this utter nonsense of a situation and handles it graciously. These are 21 year olds who were never given the space to figure out who they are or what they actually want, so they confuse attraction for devotion. For them, marriage stops being about choosing someone you love and understand and want to build something with, and becomes just the next thing that happens to you. It’s not a love story, it’s a checklist. They were never going to learn the difference because the people from whom they were supposed to receive guidance from didn’t know any better themselves.

The film had everything it needed and still didn’t commit, which is almost funny given that commitment is exactly what these characters couldn’t figure out either. The detail of Tara being “allowed” to pursue her air hostess career only after Raghu left her at the altar says more about these families than any dialogue does. The rental baraati setup, where Raghu and Gayatri work as hired wedding guests performing as a big happy family, is a sharp metaphor for the whole institution. The fourth wall breaks were the soul of the film, the only moments where the characters explained themselves so much better through monologue than through their actions or communication with each other. The film knows exactly what it’s critiquing, the double standards, the directionless boy who will “improve” after marriage, the girl whose ambitions can wait until she’s someone’s wife — the film knows all of this, it just doesn’t do enough with it. A lot of what I understood about these characters is me filling in the gaps myself, reading context from what I know about the time, the place, and how young people in India navigate these pressures. The film didn’t give me much of that explicitly, and that’s exactly the problem.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
