Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Really good. I cried twice but not enough to keep me from watching it again. I’m glad my soon to be degree is useful for something.

solid for a comedy/kid/family movie, but for a DC movie it was really cheesy. The Villains were not intimidating whatsoever

A lil corny for my palate. It seems there’s a disconnect between Shazam and Billy Batson cause he’s 18 in the movie but acts 12 as Shazam. Zachary Levi oversells being a “kid” in hero form

Shazam: Fury of the Gods impressively managed to be even worse than I already remembered. I don’t understand how any competent filmmaker can have kids riding unicorns around a war zone and then expect to take anything that happens after even remotely serious….

The writing is lost. Failing constantly to pick a lane, missing the balance of being serious and comedic. Technically speaking, the CGI is actually fine, but it’s the flat lighting and boring framing or nearly every shot which makes the whole thing as ugly as it is. It’s just so… plain, it doesn’t feel lived-in, a common issue with films in general nowadays.

The most jarring thing though, is Zachary Levi, such a profoundly untalented actor. You got from Asher Angel putting in some real dramatic work just for the character to transform and you’re left with Levi’s dumb face, standing there like a numpty. He has know apparent understanding of realisation of what it means to be a character, he just in constant ‘comedy mode’ and even then he’s not even remotely funny. Don’t even get me started on Gal Gadot.

Like in all the DCEU projects, there was promise here that was never properly realised or performed even remotely correctly. As much of a shame as it is to abandon that potential, leaving this universe in the mud is probably for the best…
