Good movie, but I have some complaints. It could’ve been better. I wish they were enemies for more of the movie and I wish it was more of a slow burn. There were also a lot of boring parts too. Acting was good though and I liked the story. 8/10.

Different than I expected but good

With the rumor mill casually doing the most about Julia Stiles possibly landing on the next season of Dancing with the Stars, obviously I had to revisit Save the Last Dance, because nothing says “sound decision making” like letting early-2000s nostalgia fully take the wheel.

And honestly? This movie is such a time capsule. The fashion, the vibe, the drama, the aggressively earnest dancing; it’s all so deeply of its moment that resisting it feels pointless. Is it a great movie? Absolutely not. Could the writing, acting, and, yes, even the dancing have been significantly better? Without question. And yet, if this movie is on, am I going to stop and watch it? Also unfortunately yes.

That said, nostalgia can only do so much heavy lifting. A lot of the film’s tropes feel lazy at best, with the writing clinging to generic, surface level ideas about urban life without ever bothering to dig deeper or say anything particularly thoughtful. It wants credit for going there while very much staying over here.

Still, there’s something undeniably watchable about it, helped a lot by the cast. Julia Stiles remains Julia Stiles, Sean Patrick Thomas brings real charm, and Kerry Washington is one of those people who somehow elevates everything just by showing up. Save the Last Dance may not be the best movie from the era, but as a messy, flawed, deeply nostalgic rewatch? She still hits her mark.
