3.3 - Admittedly, I just don’t like animal based horror very often, so if you do, & can move past the logic issues they usually have, then you’ll probably like this.
A lot of my complaints here are my general animal horror complaints. I have two big ones for this specifically. First, the animal puppetry is terrible. I know you can make a chimp look better than that. Second, there are so many moments that just fly in the face of logic & reason that despite my best efforts to suspend disbelief, I just can’t.
SPOILERS:
These teens are not stronger than a chimp in any way. You can’t push it, win tug of war with it, hold a door closed against it, or punch it into submission. Additionally, just minimal logic breaks down a lot of the plot. What’s the timeline here? Wasn’t the dad on a far away trip? Why couldn’t you just use Siri and call 911? Why did not one teen carry their phone with them? I’ll stop there but it just added up too much too quickly.
I’m happy to see Troy Kotsur again. And the gore and kills were solid, & was enough to keep some tension up, so anyone just looking for a gorefest will probably have fun. But it’s just never my thing. I mostly just felt bad for Ben because it wasn’t his fault.

As far as goofy dumb-fun horror movies go, this one’s a pretty damn good one. They do a really good job with both visual and practical effects at making Ben seem genuinely scary and the tension is held really well the whole time.

I really wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was. I understand why people are calling it silly goofy, but honestly, it surpasses most low-budget horror films I've seen. The idea feels refreshing, although giving away a pivitol plot point in the opening sequence feels nonsensical. Otherwise, I'd go as far as to call it brilliant, which is rare for flicks that play on clichés. The acting/casting was great, and the story/pacing was just as captivating as the insanely uncanny practicals/visuals/directing. As far as entertainment goes, seeing Ben go Koba level sadistic for 90mins was bananas.
