Portrait of a Lady on Fire

In French, the title is “Portrait de LA jeune fille en feu” which means “portrait of THE lady on fire”. For it to be “a lady” the French title should’ve been “portrait d’une jeune fille en feu”. Subtle but changes everything, Heloise isn’t just any woman on fire, she’s THE woman.

You will never forget this movie

i’m devastated. beautifully done movie. I’ve been avoiding this one for a while cause I knew it would fuck me up. the longing looks were well done, I felt them so deeply. the portrait of her with her kid while holding open page 28 almost made me bawl. the closing scene was crazy.

Dang. I was impressed that it was able to touch me so strongly for a movie “just” about painting.

Cinema without artifice: every glance and silence is heavier than words, every breath and wave is louder than music.

Merlant and Haenel’s chemistry is electric, carrying tenderness, desire, and restraint in perfect balance. And that final shot: pure memory, pure fire.
