Mysterious Skin
“You Called Me Your Fucking… Angel.”
Man fuck Mysterious Skin, this shit had no right to be that fucking depressing, the whole movie is relentlessly fucking miserable, there’s like 1 or 2 scenes that aren’t morally sad. But that’s probably what made the movie so great.
Mysterious Skin is one of those movies where you have the face of “oh, sorry man” for the whole movie, it’s ambitious in it’s unapologetically sad nature, and to be completely honest, it’s well deserved and I wouldn’t change it for anything, but yeah fuck this movie, will never watch it again, BUT NOT BECAUSE ITS BAD OKAYY??
1st Act 8.9/10 (Fuck you Coach, piece of shit, I hope he canonically rots in hell, also would like to add, some amazing foreshadowing here.)
2nd Act 9.2/10 (Relentlessly miserable, relentlessly good.)
3rd Act 9.8/10 (Imagine the most miserably miserable thing you can possibly imagine, AND MULTIPLY IT BY 6.)
Plot 9.2/10 (A paradoxical miserable plot for an hour and 45, SIGN ME UP.)
Soundtrack/Score 9.3/10 (Genuinely really good, love the snow scene and the ending sound.)
Acting 10/10 (Yeah the acting by both Brian and Neil is so fucking good, especially near the end where Brian gets to shine.)
Pacing 8.9/10 (Well paced but lacks a bit with the whole Avalyn side plot which could have been a one and done thing.)
Cinematography 9.7/10 (The snow scene and ending shot is all you need to know.)
Character Development 9.6/10 (Brian and Neil develop so well it’s actually unreal, though Brian develops alot more, and I wish we got to see a scene near the end where Neil’s development becomes ever more so clear, literally could have been one line, and one shot that takes 20 seconds.)
Writing 10/10 (Neil’s monologue is all you need to know.)
Ending 9.8/10 (The parallels of Neil being his angel is actually fucking insane.)
Direction 8.8/10 (Some shots linger, not many landscape shots, and why is it 90s-00s LGBT movies always have a scene of some particles in the sky, it’s becoming a weird pattern.)
