Loving the villain origin stories that have been coming out these past years. They weren’t all born wicked!

Unexpectedly really really good. Worth watching it, because not only Mufasa gets a cool origin story, but also Scar.

Surprisingly good

It was alright, I still think something like the lion king works way better with hand drawn animation. The songs were also pretty weak imo. The crux of the bad guys main theme being “bye bye” was a weird tonal clash. Also this backstory makes no sense to lead to the lion king. It’s heavily implied in the lion king that this pride system has been going on a while and there’s a heavy theme of generational inheritance and duty. The great kings of the past, etc. but that seems strange if the pride land system only came to be a few years before Simba was born. Having the concept of the pride being “everything the light touches” come from a murderer who wiped out all the other prides like 4-5 years max before the Lion king given that lions live like 10-15 years. But as a family friendly movie in its own right it was fine. It kind of felt more like a show of the “photo realistic” animals and settings, and tell a vaguely similar the-force-awakens style reference filled rehash rather than someone having something meaningful to contribute to the overall IP. Setting these things aside and not having an in depth review of a kids movie: It’s perfectly enjoyable as a family movie and has some visually cool moments without a doubt
