Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island Reviews

I expected a filler remake, but its emotional, anti-war weight caught me off guard.

What Worked:
Expanding a 20-minute episode gives the story room to breathe. Blending 2D art with CGI mecha gives the Mobile Suits tactile weight. Through my Methodist faith lens, seeing Doan desert to protect orphans beautifully reminds me that grace means choosing peace over violence. Framing Amuro with a mature edge also adds great depth.

The Cuts:
The middle part really dragged for me as pacing stalls during island chore scenes. Keeping it spoiler-free, the tonal whiplash between heavy anti-war themes and chaotic kids felt jarring. Plus, the CGI mecha sometimes looked stiff against the gorgeous hand-drawn backgrounds, pulling me out of the immersion.

Verdict:
A gorgeous dive into a lost Gundam chapter. A must-watch for thoughtful mecha action, but skip if you hate slow pacing.

Favorite Line: “Let me take the burdens of your war.”

Wish Sunrise would do this with the rest of the original series.
