Such a beautiful story about struggle and going against the odds. It’s really an incredible story that hits you deep inside and makes you feel for the characters and what they have to go through in order to survive.
The acting is unbelievably good, obviously Steven Yeun kills it, such an emotional performance that I didn’t know he had in him, but the wife, the grandma and both the kids, especially the boy does an amazing job at such a young age. It really elevates the movie with these emotional and convincing performances.
It made me feel so empty, you just can’t help but feel so helpless and sad for these characters when things get tough and aren’t going their way. When the grandma had the stroke and wasn’t acting the same for the rest of the movie it really broke me, it really hits hard because you so desperately want this family of good hard working and loving people to succeed, but the sad reality is that it’s not so easy and things won’t always go the way you want.
The movie had a really great score and music choice along with really good cinematography. Both made the movie feel more simple and straightforward.
The ending for me was not as good as I thought it was going to be, I was really hoping for this super uplifting ending where everything was working out, the have water, money and the farm is really successful. It ends on the note that things are starting to pick up for the better and that’s where the direction for the family is heading towards, but I just feel like ending with the wife not believing in the husband, the shed burning down and it not really being clear if things are gonna pick up again was slightly underwhelming. I do like the ending however, showing that things might work out but we don’t know for sure really pushes the narrative of struggle and hardship which is a good take for the film. I think my connection for the family went really deep that I was praying for the movie to show us directly that it’s getting better and they are successful, which I guess just shows how good the film is at building a connection and hope for the characters.
Really solid movie, absolutely loved it and I think it’s a must watch for all people, I think there’s really important lessons to be learned that everyone can take away and appreciate.
My score: 9/10
