Mercy

I’m surprised by the negative reviews. Thought it still brought good action and plot twists. Maybe it was too close for comfort for some how AI and crime are eerily similar. Seeing it 3D seemed the best case scenario to enhance the AI special effects. Hope people reconsider watching this film despite opening weekend being a flop.

1.6 - I’m going to admit off the bat, this is a little better than 1 star movie (like maybe 2 star?) if I’m grading 100% objectively, but I’m not. And not even seeing it in IMAX could have helped it.

This movie pissed me off. It’s cursed. It’s evil. I hated it.

From the opening exposition that toed way too closely to being straight up pro-cop & pro-surveillance propaganda, to the next 90 minutes where I had to watch Chris Pratt stuck in a chair yelling at a just a little too sentient AI Rebecca Ferguson, there’s next to nothing redeemable here.

It felt like a great tester for seeing what general audiences will be willing to endure from AI written scripts in the future, & I almost wish they took Pratt’s idea to use an AI actress in Ferguson’s place just so I could more easily justify my score.

All in, it’s not the worst plot, though it is 98% derivative & soulless. The tension is mostly weak, but it is there. And the (extra) twists were unnecessary & ham-fisted but not completely obvious. But I’m lowkey mad at myself I didn’t listen my own gut instinct to walk out about 10 minutes in like the couple behind me. But I’m not a quitter.

If you’re pro-cop propaganda, pro surveillance state, & an AI apologist, here you go. You’ll love it as much as the lady walking out at the same time as me who too loudly for a public space proclaimed to her son, “that was thrilling!” If you’re none of those things, please skip this like I should have.

Rebecca Ferguson, you deserve better.

Rewatch quality of this movie is very low. It was decent but the writing was cheesy and some of the acting was bad. I thought it would be a modern day minority report but it just didn’t execute. Predictable and bland. Some good moments and style at times. Chris and Rebecca had good acting but everyone else was dooky
