Ok wow so that was a lot. Very long movie but very interesting. My first impression of Lisa was like wow she’s a bitch and she’s very full of her self, but then as it went on I started to like her more, just cause I can kinda admire how much she put into, at least from her perspective, trying to make this horrible situation (sort of) right. But then it gets to a point where she is just obsessive and her like way of thinking about the situation isn’t even really clear till the very last scene with their lawyer. Because like at the end of the day she is the one who distracted the driver, she initiated Monica’s death basically. And even though from what we know from when she visited the bus driver, he seemed like a dick, that doesn’t really come into play in like weather or not she should kinda ruin his life. I can appreciate that she wants to make him accept that he made a mistake and be held accountable, but she’s basing her idea that he doesn’t feel guilty off of one interaction and a statement he gave (not even mentioning that she also originally gave that same statement). To me the scene where they are at the drivers house to me read more like he was clearly distressed (and probably felt guilty) about the situation but was afraid that she was going to use smth he said against him and cause him to lose his job. Which he had a right to be afraid of because that’s what she fucking ends up doing. I really just do not understand why she thinks she has the right to cause all this turmoil in this guys life just cause she needs an outlet for her guilt, and no one stops her??? Like how is it not clear that that was what was happening. Like she is the one who distracted him why is she trying to charge him with murder. To me it seems like a sort of projection of the guilt that she has onto the driver because she thinks that she should like pay for killing this woman but doesn’t actually want to face consequences? I could be completely misinterpreting it but idk she really pissed me off with that shit. Moving on, I thought it was really great to see J smith Cameron in a more emotional role. Also another thing I didn’t like about Lisa was how fucking horrible she was to her mom like I can sort of relate to both of them, cause yea being a teenager, but like girl Jesus. Joan deserved better (me). Ok but wait another thing that doesn’t make sense is I feel like they are trying to make Lisa’s relationship with her mom sort of the anchor of the whole movie but then at the same time not? Like they gave the two of them enough screen time together that you would assume that it’s one of the main things of the movie, but I don’t feel like anything was really resolved or changed at all by the end. The opera scene doesn’t really hold a lot of weight, at least in my opinion. It was building to this big emotional moment between the two of them where Lisa opens up and actually allows her mom to connect with her but then she just cries. I feel like it would have been more satisfying with dialog but at the same time it leaves it open ending which is nice. I did like the irony thing of how she latched on to Emily while her mom is making these attempts to connect with her and she’s just pushing her away. Honestly the more I think about it now, the less this movie made sense. Initially i enjoyed how many overlapping little plot lines there were, but now i feel like a lot of them didn’t really add anything to the plot or the development of Lisa’s character. Like I’m not gonna be mad about Kieran culkin in a sex scene, but what the fuck did that add, like then we literally never see him again. Was it so we can see her bonding with her dad over it? I guess it was to show how she turns to being self destructive as a way to cope with the guilt but idk. Something I did like though was how awkward a lot of scenes were, and I feel like that might be something that normally people would dislike about a movie, but I really feel like they added to the realism and also reminded the viewer how Lisa is just this high school girl. Something that surprised me though was how they got real relevant at the end with them talking about the Israeli and Palestinian conflict, even though I don’t think this movie really added anything new to the conversation it’s still interesting that that was in there. Though that’s another thing that’s like what did that have to do with the plot. Maybe I’m just really bad at understanding movies. Maybe the over lapping plot lines that don’t really have conclusions make it all the more like real life though. I can’t tell if this is a really bad movie or a really good one. I don’t know what I’m talking about to be honest. I feel like there is still a ton more I could say about this movie but I need to shut up and go to bed. I guess my main takeaway is that I found it confusing but in an enjoyable wow-it-really-makes-ya-think way. Damn I said a whole lot but also like nothing at the same time sorrrry 😑.
