This is what happens when Spike Lee and Denzel Washington work together: you get one of the BEST cinematic films in Hollywood. I saw X through and through; I forgot I was even watching Denzel act. 10/10 ✊🏾

Despite obviously having heard of Malcom X, I had genuinely no clue of his life, his views (and how they changed). So watching this, beyond being a very good film, was also extremely educative of which I’m grateful for it most.

The narrative structure was really solid, it’s a very long film in its own right, but I do think it handled it’s time very well - there’s a lot to cover so length was inevitable. Spike Lee’s shots and energy are unmatched, I thought it would be more reserved for a biopic, but thankfully alas not. Music choices of course were bangers, that Sam Cooke needle drop toward the end was transcendent.

Denzel Washington was unreal here, he’s always exceptional, but this one takes the cake. It’s passionate, but also reserved when it’s called for, the evolution of Malcom was well realised and never felt like a jump. I do wish Angela Bassett and Delroy Lindo were given more to do.

Baffling how this received only two Oscar noms, in a just world, Denzel would have got Best Actor and the film receive like 10 noms. Was waiting for the double dolly shot and it hit like a wave when it happened - great stuff.
