So random that I watched this, I had never heard of this movie nor this book series before but I saw a TikTok and was like why not? Anyways, the movie was not as bad as I thought it would be. If you don’t go into it expecting some grand, sweeping western, it’s actually a pretty decent and quietly heartfelt film. What stood out most to me were the Christian themes—like the importance of marriage, faith through adversity, redemption, forgiveness, trust in God, and compassion. I appreciated that these elements were mostly woven naturally into the story, rather than being forced or preachy. They gave the movie a grounded moral tone without overwhelming the plot. The characters are likable enough, and while I didn’t feel super emotional about their losses, I did get what the movie was trying to do. That said, the romance part felt… a little much? Not that it came out of nowhere exactly, but by the end it just felt a little too strong considering how things had been up to that point, I mean she literally hated him (for no reason) in the first half of the film then she starts to warm up to him. YES I’m aware there is a significant time jump & all the times he saved her and what not but even still it didn’t totally land for me emotionally. Adding to that, the film’s pacing does feel a bit off at times. It makes more sense when you realize it’s based on a book—there are scenes that come across as a little choppy. For example, when Marty asks Clark how Missie would feel once she leaves, he brushes it off by saying he’ll deal with it later—but then like ten minutes later, she’s casually chatting with Missie about leaving as if it’s no big deal. This is very typical book adaptation behavior. 😐 As well this had to have been a period piece because this story would never had worked in modern times, this would seem lowkey weird & kind of gross considering she’s like 19 and he’s 30 something.
