8.5 - Yorgos Lanthimos is a madman. This is an absolute heat check coming on the heels of Poor Things, which I think was his masterpiece.
I didn’t like it nearly as much. I don’t think I even understand all of what I watched. And I’m completely torn on if I want to watch it again right away or never again. It’s incredibly complex & layered. Peak misanthropy, which may be Lanthimos’s true signature. I had no idea it was a triptych of stories, & each has its own strengths & weaknesses. The debates amongst the crowd leaving my theater over which piece was strongest were getting heated. It’s once again incredibly stylistic in the way it is shot & edited. The dark humor & deadpan writing that was prominent in Lanthimos’s earlier works is all over this. The entire cast turns in great performances, & I absolutely expect Jesse Plemons name to be on many awards lists for his performance(s). It’s overall uncomfortable in so many ways. If you have problems with the sex or violence or gore of his other work, probably stay away from this one too. I really don’t want to say more because I think going in very blind will likely elevate the complete experience. We’ll see if a second watch elevates or plummets my rating - neither would shock me.

I felt quite neutral to this. There are some quite big punch gruesome endings to each story but a lot happens which was very low key that got me on the sleepy side. I think I share the sentiment of this lacking narrative cohesiveness when it seems to intend to in specific ways…

I mean, yeah. My type of movie, off beat, funny, weird, confusing, and obv the cast kills it every time. After learning this and poor things are semi connected, I def want to watch them back to back!

It's a miracle I even finished this, consciously or not. I didn't expect a 3 in 1, nor do I want one. Please stick to sequels or series. Lucky for Yorgos, I love his visual originality. Unlucky for Yorgos I hate his storytelling. Painstakingly slow, full of riddles and analogies and meanings, and just overly 'smart'. I need to be in that rare mood to enjoy any of it. I barely made it through 'Poor Things', and I barely made it through this. The best trailers for complete borefests. Washed out and bizarre, just like Wes Anderson. I find it hard to latch onto source without story. I latch onto their uniqueness though.

10/10 a beautiful written DARK comedy. I really do love the cinematography in this movie, the acting is phenomenal and the themes are really interesting. The bits of surrealism made this movie far interesting then it would without. AND THE USE OF MUSIC in this movie!!

An offbeat trilogy of twisted tales of acceptance that you can shake a leg to.

This is the kind of film that will live in my head rent free. Think of it as a trilogy of parables. Many abstract concepts are applied in human settings which makes this feel sometimes weird and uncomfortable. Thematically I just kept thinking about the idea of control. Many of the characters are desperately grasping for it, while simultaneously feeling the impact of actually having none at all. As a viewer, we also have no control, so just go for the ride and enjoy the art.

This is an anthology with the same ensemble portraying different characters with each story connected by the theme suggested by the title of the film and one unchanging character, RMF. Everything is intentional even the unnatural sounding speech patterns presented throughout.❤️💛💙

I really really loved this movie. To start, the acting was fantastic, each actor played three distinctly different characters and did it so well. Jesse Plemmons and Emma Stone knocked it out of the park with their acting. Speaking of knocking it out of the park, Yorgos Lanthimos killed it again. The directing was stellar and the story was so well written and thought provoking. I loved all of this movie but the third story stood out as really something special. Overall a solid 8.5/10

The film did not pull off what I assumed it hoped. Too long and too weird. Perhaps can be appreciated if you are more familiar with Lanthimos’ work.

I watched this with all the attention I got in me and still I couldn't get what it was trying to say.
Honestly it's the first movie I watched on which I can't really have an opinion. And this is really weird to me.

Glad this was a triptych cause I was getting bored. Each story was messed up in its own way & the acting/script was strange, as to be expected from Yorgos. My favorite part is Emma’s dance & the irony of the 3rd story’s ending. Overall, meh. Some stuff still makes no sense.

did not like poor things did not like this. i didn’t like any of margaret qualeys characters between the two movies. the artistic vision in these movies is irritating. feels like surface level writing dressed up as something it’s not
