Not your average action packed gun blasting war movie. It was mental. You felt the pain and disappointment they felt. Amazing acting 10/10 on all part. Amazing movie. Definitely a top 5

I liked this film. I liked how it focused more on the mentality of a marine, but I really wanted to see more action. The acting was just perfect from Jake Gyllenhaal and it’s prob my fav role he’s played.

some powerful and simple imagery to convey the destruction caused by American greed and politics- both in individuals and entire countries.

This is a Jake Gyllenhaal classic. Up there with Donnie Darko & Prisoners (a different vibe, I know). It’s so real and really puts you in the midst of the Desert Storm. Side by side with a Marine platoon in the desert for every intense, shocking, insane moment. Training to fight and eventually just ending up walking the desert for nothing but wasted time and trauma.
“Something in the Way” by Nirvana being in this is so fitting as well my god.
The day scenes are so bleached white like you’re constantly in a flashbang, and the night scenes are strangely beautiful with the orange glow on the black/blue sand from the oil burn offs. A strange contrast I noticed.
Fun fact, not only is “Joker” from Next Friday in this, so is “MM” from The Boys. I never realized. Also a young John Krasinski shortly. And Jamie Foxx is fantastic as well. A star studded cast for sure!

One of the best war films of the 2000s. But it was more of a perspective on how war effects soldiers than a more traditional action packed war film. So I really enjoyed it and of course Jake Gyllenhaal gave a flawless performance.
