holy set design.
i have so much to say & process.
was very much looking forward to this. like almost as much as odyssey and dune iii. that’s how stoked i was for this film.
luckily i had the chance to see it 2 days before the release. so here we go…
first of all. can we praise how fucking incredible the set design is in this film… that first act was fucking cinema. truly spectacular, every corner of the streets of hope were absolutely terrifying. so much blood, dead corpses, destruction, you could feel the horror of the mysterious monster before it was even revealed. which i fucking loved btw.
phenomenal camera work, cinematography. the camera dep + the production design team absolutely deserve an oscar bc holy shit it was visually terrifying and beautiful all in one.
stoked to see hoyeon from squid games in this, she absolutely ate her roll. like wow. she deserves more films.
hwang was a funny ass cop, great performance
zo in was a straight up bad ass.
now for the ugly, which was disappointing ngl.
vfx. i could hardly watch how bad the monster / alien whatever you wanna call it. like truly horrendous visual effects. meg 2 had better vfx than this shit. like come on…
now in terms of storytelling, yes there’s just a lot of adrenaline packed into it. but what really tilted me was the fact that the old man… forgot his name… the one that was shitting in the woods… said he witnessed “3” monsters… the same one that massacred the entire town right…. and then some avatar meets fucking resident evil licker looking motherfucker who can apparently take 10 fucking grenade launchers to the face and not die… shows up to the party when clearly we just saw there were 3 more of the same ones…. like what?!?!
that just really threw me off and truly hurt my watch especially after how fucking good the first act was before they got to the woods.
idk man, i really want to love this film, but it just felt rushed after the first act. like someone decided to change the entire look of the first monster during filming.
overall my heart was pumping out of my chest + had some great laughs and it definitely deserves some love, but it just flopped towards the end imo.
bummer, but hope part ii delivers better.
( ps. wait till the credits roll before leaving )

It erased every bit of hope left in my body after watching this. It’s so bad I still can’t believe it was directed by the great Hong Jin. An expensive movie that somehow couldn’t afford decent VFX, with neither a compelling plot nor smooth progression.

Répétitive and boring. Some very cool shots, yet some absolutely horrific CGI at times. Shitty dialogue and dumb characters.

That was crazy. Overall I liked it, but the rhythm was awfully off and long, the fight scenes felt like video game bosses with three phases, and I don’t know if we really needed that lore from the ending. It felt so off that I couldn’t stop laughing. (Amazing set design though)

The movie was BEAUTIFUL, the shots were AMAZING… then there was the monster. For as great of a movie as this was (and could’ve been), it was an undeniable eyesore. Great comedic relief for the gore and violent moments, great cast. Would definitely recommend!

korean films are the best at depicting gore. a little surprised to see it go from “a quite place” kinda vibe to “power rangers”. regardless, the comedy and camera angles were so peak. funny how even with the captions i still couldn’t understand wtf the monsters were saying..

This one was just soo fun to watch! I kept thinking it was going to be this simple story of a monster wreaking havoc in a small town. Nope, it became so much more! Love it! Also, surprisingly funny too at times.
HOPE there is a sequel! Hahah see what I did there 👀

4dx: Really intense but not enough; Spray poop fumes instead of flowers, cowards! First and third acts are perfection, while the second slows down too much for my liking. Incredible set and costume designs, didn’t notice just how cool on my first watch. The music! Those strings!

absolute madness (in the best way tho). those aliens were putting belt to ass. the first act, with va’migere wreaking havoc on the town, was the perfect amount of thrill and suspense. the camera work, keeping the monster out of frame, made it so much more terrifying because you’re just waiting to see what it looks like. the unserious comedy in there was so real too, like the old guy going on and on about how bad he had to shit.
the last act though left me so confused. once the aliens started talking, it took away the mystery and horror of them, and they all looked different too.
now i want more lore on them though, because it felt like they were trying to make us sympathize with them? i need Hope 2 released… yesterday.
