Super unsettling, but I wish they explained the witch a bit more

8.8 - Only two major films in, Damian McCarthy is already a master of atmosphere.

Thematically it’s nothing groundbreaking, but despite the overly familiar guilt and grief themes the Irish folk horror legends and fresh witch story angles alongside the whodunnit mystery blends so flawlessly that I didn’t find myself bothered by the storyline at all.

The pace is fantastic, a perfect slow burn that builds to the best scares & reveals in the later acts, without overloading us with either. Adam Scott plays the cynical antihero near flawlessly, making me really care about him by the end. And again, the atmosphere created by the dark & cramped camera work, the gorgeous Irish countryside setting, & the hair-raising music were all remarkable.

I keep reading this is a step down from Oddity for many, which I desperately need to rewatch, but I think I disagree - Damian McCarthy is on a beautiful trajectory.

The closest I’ve come to closing my eyes for the rest of the movie. I don’t know why, but this movie scared the crap out of me 😭, and @jacobmowgrass can understand why.

Seeing this at midnight certainly added to the scare factor, but also just a solid movie overall. Interesting storyline and great tension throughout. Adam Scott killed it as well, which is to be expected.

Adam Scott was excellent in this. The movie itself seemed like it couldn’t make up its mind about what it wanted to be. Definitely had some freaky moments, but it all seemed so random.

Adam Scott is absolutely amazing and has so much range and talent but that’s about all this film brings sadly. I wanted to enjoy this movie but it just didn’t excite me.

I think it just didint know what it wanted to be, a horror ? murder mystery ? thriller ? Cause it definitely wasn’t horror and it just kind of lost me. Sadly not for me.

The sounds and music made jumpscares really creepy

I liked it a lot. The atmosphere the film builds is really good, and it works really well with the plot. I wouldn’t call this a horror movie over calling it a mystery. Majority of the film is kind of a murder mystery where Adam Scott is figuring things out and trying to escape a certain room and I loved those moments.

The films very well shot as well, it just looks really good quality and it’s filmed beautifully.

It built tension very well and while there weren’t many, the jump scares were pretty effective. Its main horror beats came from eeriness, things in the background and generally creepy shit going on. Although I do think they fumbled some of the scares, some moments could’ve definitely been enhanced by some type of music or noise at the crescendo, like for Jerry’s death, its a cool moment that we knew was coming for a split second before it happened, but there was no build up of music or noise before or even after it happened, it was completely silent, which sometimes can work with shock value stuff, but I don’t think it was as effective here. Also there’s so many moments where I was expecting a jump scare but we got like a tiny somewhat sound if even that, I don’t know it kind of felt weird having this creepy scary thing happen and it’s met with silence, almost like it’s not even acknowledged

Overall a solid horror for the year, the hate it gets is so dam invalid man, people acting like it’s as bad a whistle, the mummy or scream 7.

My score: 7/10

I’m a big fan of the lore and the entity behind it. I just wish they had utilized it more to deliver genuine chills and scares. Still, it’s better than Oddity in my book. And Caveat for the win!

another solid movie from this director! i have really enjoyed all his stuff so far and yet again this had a solid story and creepy visuals done in what i feel is his signature style
i enjoyed adam scott's performance and the emotional journey his character went on as well

Honestly, the beginning was super vague, but the ending really brought everything together.
I really really love allegories in movies, it just gives it more depth and just feels richer.
Also, I am not a big fan of Adam Scott, but in this movie his acting was perfecto

Really enjoyed this. It delivers some real-deal supernatural scares but also stays grounded in a plausible human plot, and it’s a lot of fun hanging out in this creepy Irish countryside hotel. Adam Scott plays a very convincing misanthrope, he was comically loathsome at first

I have a few gripes with this movie, for starters i expected something else. something more from this movie. But don’t get me wrong the movie was still good.

I really despise Adam Scott. Idk what it is about him that I just find so absolutely insufferable… but my GOD that man knows how to pick a good project. 👏🏼

I saw it last night at the Scream Unseen and loved it. It’s a fantastic ghost story with plenty of realistic grounding. The horrors are folklore, but they are also human and secretive. There’s lot of little moments that create excellent tension and dread without having to be a jumpscare. There’s a few weaknesses, such as the weird story of the father and son that feels out of place and the fact that Adam Scott is trying to play an unlikeable jerk. I’m sorry but Adam Scott could never be a jerk.
