Bare minimum character growth.

Not quite as good as I was hoping. I wasn't a fan of the narrative structure; it felt way too back and forth for no good reason, which made the first half lack any real fluidity. The writing was actually pretty good, dialogue-wise at least, though I personally didn't love the constant fourth-wall breaking, don’t really fit - a narration might have worked better.

John Cusack was great - he fit the role perfectly and played it as such. There’s a lot of range on display here, perhaps the best I’ve seen from him (granted, I haven’t seen much of his work). Jack Black was just Jack Black - what else would you expect.

It’s a very noughties-feeling film, which is exactly what it is, so there you go. Since the movie is so obsessed with making lists: Laura has one of the top 5 worst fringes of all time.
