Whenever a dialogue based film with a small cast and set in one location is able to keep my attention I know the writing is tight. This movie is able to take the often fumbled topic of religion and belief and make the audience think, challenging them w/o attacking them

The first part of this movie felt so masterfully woven and was on track to becoming my favorite movie but it really lost me at the end. It feels like they ran out of time and just had to rush to finish it and some of the most interesting points were left unresolved and lacking…..

Absolutely phenomenal acting, for all 3 of the main characters. Past that, it's boring and preachy and stiff. It's Hugh Grant mansplaining religion to two teenage girls. Thats the movie. It felt like watching an incel athiest doing a youtube essay to disprove faith. So, meh.

Gorgeous filmmaking and great plot-progression but the theme was handled so poorly. makes me wonder how someone can hate religion that badly that they feel the need to make a movie to antagonize others. Just let people believe.

If you’re obsessed with the sound of Hugh Grant’s voice, you will love this movie because he never shuts the fuck up. I mean he just drones on and on and on and just when you think he might finally stop talking, he comes in with a slide show. This isn’t a movie, it’s a lecture.

7.6 - LOVE religious debate. I grew up with multiple faiths in my own household, & attended Catholic school as a kid. And I now consider myself agnostic at best. I think there’s flaws to the arguments made by Hugh Grant’s character, & respect the way they allowed the girls the character depth to argue & dispute themselves, so the early conversations were extremely thought provoking. So, overall, the first 2/3 of this or so was 100% my thing - a tense, thoughtful, high pressure, theology thriller.
Then it feels almost like it starts to improvise a bit. (😉) Like maybe it wasn’t sure where to go to make it really fit the horror genre. When it becomes more of a standard chase, hunt for survival, I think it loses just a bit of steam. And I have very mixed feelings on the resolution. The whole thing felt a little like Saw, & a little like Barbarian, & I’m sure like a little of a lot of other cat and mouse horror, but there was plenty that didn’t quite click down the stretch.
It is full of great performances - one of my absolute favorites from Grant & a standout one from Sophie Thatcher. Also as mentioned moments of smart dialogue, & some really great set design. It’s just missing pieces to be all time great.
Huge step up for the directing team from 65 though!

A really smart discussion around religion and people’s connection to it. While it starts out perfectly, building tension, and creating a thoughtful horror film, the film struggles on its ending. Definitely a unique horror film worth a watch though.

7.5/10 I thought the premise of this movie was really good, the tension between characters was very intense, but overall I am not sure I would classify it as a horror, rather intellectual thriller? I felt the plot was kinda lost going into the third act but it wasstillv cohesive!

Loved the first half, the dialogue & debate was so interesting & well written. I also liked the small cast, great acting, & character developments for Hugh & the girls. It kind of lost me in the 2nd half. Was hoping for more philosophical/theological slow burn horror throughout.

it’s a well done movie but i think it’s to pretentious with all that religious commentary, i understand the vision and the concept but it gets boring at some point

Great characters and dialogue and acting, appreciated the talk on theology. Overall plot ending not the best. Topher grace fun cameo, weak character. Strong like for a horror movie.

A24 does it again! More of a psychological thriller, the tension starts the moment they’re on that doorstep. As the viewer is sometimes forced to look inward in these scenarios, the cat-and-mouse game proved to be an uncomfortable watch in the best way.

Well this one definitely got the conversation flowing folks! Human behaviour…religion…moral beliefs all wrapped up in a deeply disturbing narrative. Hugh Grant portrayed the twisted Mr Reed impeccably, leaving me hoping that Bridget Jones never leaves her kids with him again 🤣
