It’s difficult to describe the level of genuine, wondrous authenticity that comes with this film. The sound design is iconic, the cinematography is legendary, it’s a loud, shaky, experimental marvel, and it deserves the praise it never fully received. This is not a perfect film, it has more holes than I could count, it’s not the best told story, and maybe it’s a bit drawn out, but the finished product is so easy to love. Loud engines drowned out by an even louder jazz soundtrack with a shaky cam filming most certainly illegal stunt driving is just too, too good. It’s an experience worth viewing, and it’s a film whose legacy is on display in every race, chase, and escape in the 50 years of film that followed. It’s worth calling the director, and this film, a pioneer. 4.5/5
