Solid movie but didn’t love it. Surprisingly not usually a huge war movie guy and wanted a little more emotion from this one but definitely felt emotion in the last 30 min. and in the Denzel getting whipped scene. I thought Matthew Broderick was just ok as the lead, morgan freeman didn’t do as much as I thought. But the overall story of one of the first black regiments coming together to fight for a better america but losing was powerful

Denzel was a little complex at first but really good in this. A former slave who has joined the army and doesn’t trust anyone and hates america. He’s defiant and tough and refuses to have anything to do with the flag. But as the movie goes on he realizes this regiment is the only family he’s ever had and wants to fight for them and a better future. During the whipping scene he shows a tough face but a single tear drops from the pain and humiliation. He maintains the anger and defiance throughout the movie but shows cracks of change. I love in the final battle when Broderick dies and Denzel picks up the flag he said he would never hold. Just wish he lasted a bit longer after picking up the flag and his screen time was very limited

Definitely a well made movie in most regards, but it also didn’t really do anything for me. It’s got good intentions, great performances, and some standout scenes for sure but it’s held back by not really letting you get to know the characters. It was hard to be invested in them.
