French Connection II Reviews

Jesus, what a fall from grace. This is seriously one of the most tedious and non-eventful films I can recall from recently memory. Perhaps I wouldn’t feel so strongly if it wasn’t a sequel to such a fantastic movie, yet somehow it is - despite being a tonal polar opposite that opts to play like a cheap action flick instead.

I should have seen this coming where a story was made that deviated from reality and as a result, the plot is non-existent. Instead, you’re forced to spend 20 minutes watching a once great cop kick an addiction cold turkey, slurring nonsense and the most uncharacteristic French man you’ve ever met. All while the already drab narrative screeches to a film destroying halt, all for it to finish the film off with perhaps the worst, most underwhelming endings I’ve ever seen.

I’m going to pretend this doesn’t exist, and enjoy The French Connection as the excellent standalone film it was meant to be!

I preferred the original film but Gene Hackman is great as this character once again and the sequel in my opinion had a better ending than the original.
