Drive My Car

“My hardships might even be greater than yours but I don't give in to despair.”

Without a doubt the most inconsistent movie I’ve ever watched, the score, cinematography and acting were incredible, but the first 2 acts are so fucking boring, as Drive My Car delivers with a visual feast and a stunning soundtrack, yet has such slow character moments that it’s borderline ling GET ON WITH IT.

1st Act 6.6/10 (On one hand he’s grieving, on the other it’s pissing me off.)

2nd Act 6/10 (I DONE WANT TO WATCH THIS THEATRE PLEASE GO BACK TO DRIVING.)

3rd Act 9.8/10 (The last 50 minutes are actually really fucking good, it’s just a shame it’s trapped behind 2 HOURS OF FUCKING FILLER.)

Plot 5/10 (Uninteresting main plot of the theatre show and a very interesting side plot which is only barely utilised near the end.)

Soundtrack/Score 9.4/10 (Genuinely amazing, it made some eh scenes so much better.)

Acting 9.4/10 (Acting is phenomenal, just wished the script was better at times.)

Pacing 3/10 (Felt like it was slow-burning the way the Sun slow burns my fucking back.)

Cinematography 9.6/10 (An absolute feast that has the best use of colour I’ve seen since La La Land, if Your Name. ever got a live action remake, this is the colour I want.)

Character Development 9.4/10 (Both frustrating and amazing, the whole first act he just pissed me off, the last act I felt genuinely so fucking bad, not because of character development in the redemption way, but the realise kind.)

Writing 9.3/10 (The script is amazing at times, sometimes it’s just meh.)

Ending 9.5/10 (Makes the movie so much more worth it, will I still revisit? Not for a long long time.)

Direction 8/10 (Decent but he’s like Asian Bela Tarr, just without the grey sadness.)

Overall
95/120
7.5/10

Very pretty looking movie as expected.

The main theme of communication is interpreted very interestingly here. The scene with Tatatsuki and Kafuku in the back of the car was very moving and i find it to be true.

A 3 hour adaptation of a 40 page short story is pretty crazy, but there is so much flesh added to these characters. Although it felt long, it didn’t feel like anything was out of place.
