Draft Day
5.6 - Lots of discourse around this movie, specifically “is it good?” this year (& most years around NFL Draft time) so I finally rewatched it.
Is it good? No. Is it fun? Kind of.
It’s absurd & corny. It’s arguably too corny. There’s a few too many storylines that are just a little too cringey or unbelievable. Not drafting a guy because of an unverified anecdote about a birthday party? The number one guy going number one in part because he’s taking care of kids AND his sister died? The GM’s entire spiral is because his dad who used to be the coach, who he FIRED, died last week AND his secret girlfriend that he works with is pregnant? And they’re going to reach to bring the kid of the former team star onto the team too?
But at the same time, the NFL thrives on these stories every year. If you watch the draft there’s a storyline like this queued up for every one of the 40ish projected first round prospects.
Honestly my problems are more on just the absurdity of Kevin Costner’s character’s actions & how they could never happen in the first place, & would be too risky to even consider especially for a guy on the hot seat. Most of all reaching for a 6’ 200 lb LB with pick 1.1 which you just mortgaged your future for over the consensus 1.1 best prospect in years (again on an unverified anecdote) is legitimate insanity. Don’t even get me started on the risks on established team QB Brian Drew.
It is fun that real team assets were used, real NFL media personalities were involved, & parts of the general process were stuck to.
I’ve seen it twice, I’m sure I’ll see it again. And I’ll use the no matter what memes for fantasy drafts for the rest of my life. But objectively, no, not a “good” movie.

I loved this movie, I loved the plot and it had great performancesI They were able to capture the anticipation that sports fans feel, I was as excited to watch this fake draft as I was to watch a real draft. That is why it is currently my favorite sports movie, I loved it

Draft Day
Solid movie. Great acting and super interesting to imagine what the behind-the-scenes looks like for an NFL GM. Lots of psychological themes that make the movie cool
