Die Hard: With a Vengeance

Die Hard With a Vengeance is better than Die Hard 2, but not as good as the peerless original. Samuel L. Jackson ensures that Bruce Willis’ third stint as ragged detective John McClane is a triumphant one.

First of all, fantastic choice to bring back John McTiernan to direct after that god-awful sequel. Die Hard with a Vengeance is much more on the same level as the original - it’s fun, great action, witty comedy and fantastic set pieces that are arguably even better here. The plot is well thought out, the cast of characters is great, and most importantly the stakes feel impactful.

I think this is actually my favourite of Willis’s performances in the series. In the original he’s a bit too cocky, and don’t even get me started on Die Harder. Bringing in Sam Jackson was a great choice, he does some great stuff here and brought ‘human’ stakes to the film. Wish Jeremy Irons was given a bit more to do - more in line with what Alan Rickman got in the first.

The ending, where the riddles stop derails the train a bit - the only thing really stopping this from being a 4 star film. Still, it’s a seriously great action-flick. I actually forgot how good this one really was.

sort of a forgettable action flick, the most memorable thing is mclane saying that he hasn’t spoken to his wife in well over a year which eludes to him maybe being a dead beat dad because being around your kids would require you to speak to their mother
