Death of a Unicorn

The poor baby died like three times 😭

I wanted to like this, especially for its metaphors on exploitation, grief, greed and morality. The unicorns too, of course. Unfortunately, it got almost repetitive and somehow bland the more it went on. Each character/cast is a realistic stereotype, and I loved them all as well as the comedy, but the unicorns held all the 'Jurassic Park' level tension. However, I did need more lore because the more screentime the stiff-scripted, capitalistic humans got, the more my anticipation wore off. Also, the production could've been more practical too. I liked the designs but grew tired of how artificial they felt.

I had a lot of fun with this movie. Everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun playing their roles. Some cartoonish villains to bring the urban fantasy premise into full swing. Unicorns were wonderful and brutal

This movie just started playing so we watched it with no idea going into it. It was a wild ride

The idea is good, but unfortunately, it just doesn’t work. It’s the typical story of a teenage girl whose mother has passed away and who has a bad relationship with her father. Her dad genuinely wants to reconnect with her, but it never works because she keeps talking about unicorns and, of course, he doesn’t believe her (yeah, we’ve seen that before).

It feels like Jenna Ortega is still playing Wednesday or the same emo girl she’s known for. Paul Rudd, even though I like him, didn’t deliver one of his best performances. He came across as clueless most of the time. The supporting characters also felt directionless, as if the film didn’t know what it wanted to do with them.

The unicorn visual effects were terrible. The CGI was way overdone in many scenes, making them look fake rather than convincing. You never really know if the movie wants to be a horror film or a comedy. I’m surprised this came from A24, especially considering how many great films the studio has released.

i really liked this movie! i didn’t know i needed a paul rudd and jenna ortega duo! also the rest of the cast!!!

griff is def the best hahah and i so saw where that was going with Odell and the two unicorns….
