I didn't mind the slow boil, and was intrigued, but I didn't really buy into the characters or enjoy journeying with them. Roy's character development and motivation for his choice are absent or unconvincing. I liked the air traffic control scene and the overall air of mystery at the beginning. The ending was really good and had some truly amazing shots (but also a bit creepy and uncreative in the alien designs). I appreciated the craft but not all of it worked for me... so it'd be between like and meh for me if I could.

If you want a movie that will leave you wondering how much time is left until you realize the slow pacing and poor writing will eventually lead to nothing…Look no further! The middle of the film is hard to watch and ultimately pointless.

The hook of a movie should interest the audience and make them question whats going on.
Sometimes the answer to the question, the reveal, is a little over done, annoyingly stretched out across the movie, leading to a disappointing watch

After Jaws Spielberg made this wish was an flop then but I really had a good time watching this.
The effects was kind of impressive for being made in the 70s and the score was just incredible. But the first half was not so great as the second half.

Woah oh my goodness! What a movie, this film was in the early stages of Spielberg’s career and yet again he created an absolute masterpiece, which leaves me shocked that I don’t hear this movie mentioned too much. Super fun watch and really mysterious which I love!

It was a little bit of a long movie for me but maybe that’s cus I watched it at midnight

Revisiting a classic Spielberg masterpiece. I honestly think this is one of the most breathtaking sci-fi movies ever made; the wonder still hits perfectly.

What Worked:
• Blinding, colorful lights honestly make the UFOs look completely alive.
• Dreyfuss brings a manic energy that totally grounds Roy’s obsession for me.
• John Williams’ five-tone theme is genius and totally pops at the end.

The Friction:
• The middle household breakdown part really dragged for me.
• Loud family arguments occasionally pulled me out of the awe-inspiring vibe.

Verdict:
Watch for a gorgeous, timeless masterpiece. Skip if slow 70s pacing annoys you.

Not my favorite but even so I think it's a good moment to watch the aliens movie from Spielberg.

Last week I had this conversation with the projectionist at work if he heard the rumors about Disclosure Day being a secret sequel for Close Encounters and he wants that to be true so bad. He’s gonna watch it today and on Friday he’ll tell me if it’s good.

Gobsmacked by the visual effects, particularly as the film reaches the finale.

Really enjoyed this take on an “alien film”, it’s never an invasion, more a voyage of discovery and understanding that’s handled really well. Intrigue hits pretty quick and you ponder the intentions alongside the characters. The whole use of music was pretty genius and incredibly effective, feel like I’m gonna be humming that 5 note tune for a few days.

Richard Dreyfus was really good here, I wasn’t initially on board at the start, but as the character’s paranoia sinks in and develops into borderline insanity, was when it really came together for me.

Streets are saying that Disclosure Day is a secret sequel to this, so thought best to give it a watch, was easily overdue anyway with a few others of Spielberg’s.

meh - i’m usually an enormous fan of alien movies but this just fell kinda flat and didn’t scratch my itch - spielberg tells a cool story but it feels kinda slow and boring at timez

I wanted to like this more, but I still enjoyed it. This instantly becomes one of my favorite scores from a movie. The way John Williams creates a score that perfectly fits with the story and is literally a part of it is amazing. Not perfect or Spielberg’s best, but still good.
