It lacked depth. As in like first half was fucking sick ya, but second half was fucking slow. Which isn’t a bad thing but they didn’t use the opportunity to create any depth. Which is what significantly decreased my rating. Violence was well violent. Sex scenes were mid

It was intense, and I was definitely not prepared! I remember in an interview, Sandeep (director) said, "My last 2 films were violent? In my next movie, I will show you violence!" He really did it! 😳

2 hours of my life i’ll never get back. everyone worked on one shared brain cell, and the plot was just everywhere & nowhere.
i’m not even gonna start on the toxic masculinity.
is this rly the film that had the best leading actor??? 🤡🤡

AND WYM A SEQUEL?? DID ANYONE ASK + CARE??

Men thinking they are alpha/sigma males for 3 hours straight.

In all that time Ranbir Kapoor's facial expression doesn't change once. Lots of distasteful & misogynistic attempts at humour. Some of the fight scenes were cute I guess. Learn how to write women xx

Animalllll (was never planning to watch it)
First of all, it was really long—more than 3 hours—but I was never bored. More than bored, I was uncomfortable and waiting for them to come to the point, but it wasn’t boring somehow. The loooong runtime makes it feel like a TV show where you get fully immersed in the world, and that is what I didn’t want. The good things about this movie were: the songs (to a certain point), visuals were really great, Ranbir Kapoor’s acting, Bobby Deol’s character.

It felt like this movie is made exclusively for men. There seemed to be no feminine touch. At one point, suddenly, when the main girl character finally had a moment where they show she’s a human that has thoughts and feelings too, they play only female vocal music in the background, and I was like omggg that feels so nice to not have that raging techno beat or a man’s voice. I remember reading about the masculine aspect of the movie Gladiator (2000), a film mainly about men and war and Gladiator boy Maximus. Hans Zimmer felt the movie needed a feminine touch too, so he added that really lovely score where there’s a female voice in the vocals, and it really balances the movie out and makes a bigger impact on Maximus’s journey.

But yeah, Animal does feel very, very masculine—the music, the dialogue, everything. Me as a woman who doesn’t like this absolutely pagal hyper-masculine man trope didn’t really enjoy it that much. I do appreciate masculinity in men, but not to this extent. It didn’t feel like Peaky Blinders, where the masculine touch is cool and suave—here it’s quite like men are animals. Every man in this movie is a person I never want to meet ever.

I won’t criticize too many things because overall it was quite an enjoyable and entertaining movie. There are only two things I would like to address.
First of all, the villain or whatever he is—Bobby Deol—was the most interesting character in the entire film, and he barely had any run time apart from a very exhausting fight scene. He seemed like a perfectly likeable horrible villain, and I was really rooting for him. It doesn’t help that I don’t really like Ranbir Kapoor IRL too, so I did want him to die, but yeah they’re anyways making a franchise, maybe make a prequel about Bobby Deol’s character.

The next thing I cannot not address with this movie is the portrayal of women. Sure, fine, I’m okay with the whole alpha male thing—strong, crazy man killing everyone, bla bla—there are tons of movies not only in Bollywood with men like this. But the women in this movie are the most weak creatures on earth. So submissive and chui mui. They barely have any lines, and Ranbir Kapoor just keeps running his mouth. The weird innuendos that are supposed to be funny are just kind of dumb. The women get treated like the weaker sex who don’t have the capability to speak or think for themselves. Every single scene where Ranbir Kapoor spoke to his love interests made me super uncomfortable.

The runtime was also pretty long, there were a lot of things they dragged on and on, and I was just itching to go home.

Overall, entertaining movie. Makes you really think about what kind of men you would really feel comfortable being around in real life and who to avoid.

A few more things I noticed…
The father-son storyline felt central, but it was handled in such an over-the-top, melodramatic way that it didn’t hit me emotionally the way I think they intended. I get the themes of abandonment, masculine grief, unresolved trauma—all of that was in there. But instead of digging deep into that, they covered it in violence, blood, and over-glorified machismo. It’s like the film thought if they just shouted emotions, we would feel them too.

Also, the cinematography was sometimes stunning—like wallpaper-level stunning—but it felt like style over substance. The scenes looked great but didn’t always feel great. And while I enjoyed the visuals, they sometimes felt disconnected from the actual tone of the movie, like it didn’t know whether it wanted to be gritty or glossy.

Ranbir Kapoor did give a committed performance—he was clearly all in—but again, the writing gave him limited emotional range. Most of the time, he was either smoldering, yelling, or killing. There were moments when you could see his vulnerability peeking through, and I wish the film had allowed more of that. It would’ve made the character much more compelling.

Also, there was such a weird tonal shift in the second half—suddenly it felt like a different movie. The pacing got even more chaotic, and some plot choices were almost laughable. The movie wanted to be emotional, psychological, action-packed, romantic, and tragic all at once—and in trying to do everything, it didn’t fully succeed at any one thing.

Still, people were clapping in the theatre. It’s definitely one of those movies that has a big impact, even if you don’t agree with its vision. I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone, but it’s worth watching if you’re curious about where Bollywood is heading with its current obsession with toxic male antiheroes.
