Alien: Romulus

That creature look like some of yall

Bafflement and bewilderment. This may just be one of the best in the entire franchise. Mr. Alvárez knew exactly how to take full advantage of the resources given to him. From cheesy 80s-style catchphrases to the stark silent cinematography. Ridley and Ripley brought us to this world way back, WHEN? Romulus takes the best qualities of each Alien movie and rebirths them into one collective masterpiece. Terror, love, guilt, anger, sadness, fear, hope, you could taste the adrenaline coming off the cast. My ears and eyes got shredded by the sound, set, and costume design. Pure cinema, at its peak.

It was way too slow to start, the characters make some of the worst decisions possible, and the only one who was thinking logically was vilified for saving lives. Too few jump scares. But this movie would be SCARY AF for someone with arachnophobia. And that ENDING though? 🔥🔥🔥

Following up my 1979 Alien rewatch with Fede Álvarez’s survival-horror bridge was the next move. I love this; trapping young miners inside a decaying station with Alien: Isolation tension and practical monsters makes my palms sweat.

The Director's Eye (What Worked):
• David Jonsson steals the movie as Andy alongside Cailee Spaeny’s Rain.
• Rusted orange lighting and planetary rings give a grimy, claustrophobic look.
• Animatronic facehuggers, Xenomorph suits, and practical finale prosthetics beat CGI.
• Álvarez turns zero-gravity acid blood into survival puzzles while Wallfisch’s score booms.

The Friction (What Didn't Click for Me):
• The digital face on Rook matching the late Ian Holm looks rubbery and uncanny.
• Dropping the exact “Get away from her, you bitch” line feels like forced fan service.

The Verdict:
I love it. Watch for tactile space horror. Skip if uncanny deepfakes bug you.
