Ethereal and grounded simultaneously, (don’t pay too much attention to the mystery and it works better) and Doc Sportello is an all-time PTA protagonist

If it wouldn’t have Joaquin it’d be a meh. Apart from that, the best word to describe this is tripping✌️

Biiiggg Disco Elysium vibes here ohhh yea brother. I really didn’t get all of those details it was a LOT. A lot happening and many different characters who you meet quick and then they are referred to by their whole name and nothing else as if you should remember them. But honestly I don’t mind that it was confusing it didn’t really take away from it for me. It’s not confusing in a way where you are like aarruhhggg this doesn’t make any sense it’s more like it’s picking you up and taking you for a ride and if you don’t get 100% of the details figured out it’s ok cause we are moving onto the next thing anyway. Realllll fun time yes yes yes I do enjoy the things you do Paul Thomas Anderson you devil you. This is what I mean when I say I love a long movie. I was not bothered by the length of this movie at any point. The vibes were so good I wanted to live in it for as long as I can and if you are making a long movie that’s how it HAS to be or else you have to die

Quite easily, and disappointingly, the PTA film that I’ve connected with the least.

Maybe I’m just stupid, but the whole film felt really difficult to follow? There seemed to be a load of nonsense happening every other scene, and things that were, or at least felt, important, always felt like I was catching half of the story. Narrative aside, the vibes and atmosphere of the era was pulled off immaculately, 70’s LA felt real, and truly lived in.

Joaquin Phoenix naturally does a very good job here, it’s very rare that he doesn’t impress. Josh Brolin too, another very consistent performer. Hong Chau had a small role here, like many of the other actors do, playing a small part of a big, complex story, but her performance really stood out to me.

Maybe one I need to revisit, now I have at least some notion of what happens. But yeah, this one wasn’t really my bag I’m afraid.
