You've Got Mail

A movie that’s oddly relevant today. With online dating and meeting people online becoming more and more prevalent and regular, this film reminds us of the incongruities that can come along with such regularities. With a believable romance and lovable characters. 10/10 romcom.

6/10- good rom com. Interesting storyline that I’ve never seen in a romcom before. The ending kind of felt forced, but I loved how Tom Hanks built up the relationship before telling her that he was the guy.

I genuinely don’t know how to fully put into words what rom-coms from this era mean to me, but rewatching so many of them with my 20 year old this summer has been the sweetest reminder of why they still have such a hold on me. There’s just something about them that modern rom-coms keep trying to replicate and almost never quite reach.

And of course, when it comes to peak comfort viewing from this time, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are sitting firmly at the top of the list like the royalty they are. Their chemistry feels effortless, their charm never tips into gimmick, and they both bring a kind of warmth and genuineness that you simply cannot manufacture because two attractive people were booked on the same set. It either exists or it doesn’t, and here it absolutely does.

Then you add in a supporting cast stacked with scene stealers like Dave Chappelle, Dabney Coleman, Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, and Steve Zahn, and it becomes even more of a delight. Everyone understands the assignment, which is apparently: be funny, be lovable, and make this world feel so inviting that the audience would gladly move in and start buying overpriced books and coffee immediately.

And with Nora Ephron writing and directing, it’s no surprise the whole thing feels magical. She had such a gift for making everyday life feel witty, romantic, and just a little idealized in the best possible way. To me, the true mark of a great rom-com is whether it makes you want to climb right into the movie and live there for two hours, and You’ve Got Mail does that tenfold.
